ARC TBC Mary Ann Lawton baptism and marriage?

Post by gardener »

Hi

This Mary Ann was mother to Jane Severns. Jane's birth place is given as Soho, Warwickshire in the 1891 census, but she was actually born in Walsall so that is a bit of a puzzle.

However, her mother was given as born Birmingham in both the 1851 and 1861 census, and I wondered where exactly in Birmingham that was.

Here https://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/t ... ver=555730

There is this possibility in 1841

1841
Registration District: Walsall
Sub-registration District: The Borough
Piece: 983
Book: 3
Folio: 27
Page Number: 1
Saml Waklin 37 Y
Sussanah Wakelin 4 Mo Y
Mary Anne Lawton 11 N
Jane Lawton 16 N [not convinced about the 16, see later]

Susannah's birth is:
WAKELIN, SUSANNA LAWTON
GRO Reference: 1841 M Quarter in THE WALSALL UNION Volume 17 Page 261

And there is this
Name: Susanna Wakeland
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 18 Sep 1841
Baptism Place: Saint Matthew,Walsall,Stafford,England
Father:
Samuel Wakeland
Mother:
Jane

I think Jane's age should be 36, not 16. She does not seem to have married Samuel, but after he died she married a James Johns.

Walsall
St Matthew
Burial date 27 Apr 1842
Burial person forename Samuel
Burial person surname WAKELIN
Person age 40
Burial person abode Rushall St

Name: Jane Lawton

Record Type: Marriage
Residence Place: Rushall Street, Walsall
Marriage Date: 6 Jun 1842

In 1851 Jane Johns and son Samuel were here, transcription very mangled:

Harriett Newbell 22
Ellen Newbell 2
June Newbell 5 Mo
Jane John 16 [Jane Johns mother 46 shoe maker's wife Birmingham]
Susan John 8 [Samuel Johns]
Elizabeth W Sanders 23

There is a baptism for Jane
Name: Jane Lorton
Event Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 30 May 1806
Baptism Place: Birmingham, St Martin, Warwickshire, England
Father: Owen Lorton
Mother: Charlotte Lorton

no address but another entry for ? a brother has one
Name: John Lorton
Baptism Date: 10 Mar 1814
Baptism Place: Birmingham, St Paul, Warwickshire, England
Father: Owen Lorton Livery Street, Warwickshire Militia
Mother: Charlotte Lorton

Owen and Charlotte were in Walsall by 1841

1841

Trying to get my head around this added in some on Bcc.

So Mary Lawton has father Owen Lawton and mother Charlotte Baker.

so who is that Thomas Lawton is that Owens father?

and the Charlotte Lawton that marries venebles is her father not Thomas lawton?

Owen Lawton bapt. 24 March 1788 St Philip’s Birmingham, parents Thomas and Ann; married Charlotte Barker 20 May 1805 All Saints West Bromwich (Owen Laughton)

Children of Owen Lorton/Lawton/Laughton and Charlotte
1) Jane bpt. Jane Lorton 30 May 1806, St Martin, Birmingham, married James Johns 6 June 1842
2) John bpt. John Lorton 10 March 1814, married Ann Genders 2 Aug 1847, St Michael the Archangel, Rushall [note: also baptised St Philip’s born 4 Mar 1814, bapt. 15 Apr 1816, mother Sarah, father Owen, same address]

3) Thomas b. abt. 1808, married Martha Slater 3 July 1826 St Philip’s Birmingham (first son named William Owen b. 28 Nov 1826, bpt. 11 Jun 1829 St Martin Birmingham). Died 1856 aged 48, 1851 census aged 43?
4) Elizabeth b. abt. 1826, married John Stone 24 Dec 1854 St Philip’s Birmingham (father Owen, witnesses Mary A and William Lorton) Note: 1861 census born 1827; 1871 census b. 1826 – Jane Severns is in household. Think this is Elizabeth from the 1841 census, NOT gdau Elizabeth from 1851 census.

Not sure if Thomas is the son of Owen or not. Can only find a baptism for Thomas son of a Thomas and Ann. He could be the father of Charlotte

Charlotte Lawton b. abt. 1830, father Thomas Lawton brass founder (married Samuel Venables 1 Aug 1848, in 1851 census with Jane but named Harriett)

I think that Mary Ann Lawton (mother of Jane Severns) was probably the daughter of Jane Lawton and grand dau of Owen. But can't find a baptism or marriage for her online.

In 1871 Jane Severns was in the same household as Elizabeth Stone (daughter of Owen Lawton) and Charlotte Venables (daughter of Thomas Lawton according to her marriage certificate)

1871 Census R10-2965/118
The Foreign of Walsall,Walsall,St Matthews
1 Vicarage Terrace
John Stone,head,m,38,bridle cutter. Employs 1 man 2 boys 10 cutters(?),Staffs,Walsall
Elizabeth Stone,wife,m,45,Warwicks,Birmingham
William A Stone,son,14,scholar,Staff,Walsall
James Stone,son,9,scholar,Staff,Walsall
William Stone,son,7,scholar,Staff,Walsall
Thomas Stone,son,5,scholar,Staffs,Walsall
Jane Severns,serv,13,domestic servant,Staffs,Walsall
Charlotte Venables,visitor,mar,42,Warwicks,Birmingham
Frank Venables,visitor,7 months,Staffs,Walsall1 Vicarage Terrace

Jane Lawton (dau Owen) and Charlotte (dau of Thomas) were in the same household in 1851, so the family obviously stayed in touch over the years.

Walsall 1851
Samuel Venables 21
Harriett Venables 22
Ellen Venables 2
Jane Venables 5 Mo
Jane Johns 46
Samuel John 8
Elizabeth W Sanders 23

It did cross my mind that if Mary Ann was the illegitimate daughter of Jane, then perhaps Charlotte was too. But obviously that is speculation!
