Albert OWEN 1902

Hi

I'm hoping someone can help me with my brick wall of my paternal grandfather. Wasn't sure if I should post here or brick walls, so admin please move if I'm in the wrong spot.

My mother knows very little about her father Albert OWEN. He died suddenly (dropped dead in the street) when she was 7'years old and he was not talked of because he was not married to my grandmother although they had four children together. Here is what I know:

My grandmother born Ethel Rose PEACOCK 10/3/1903 Croft, Lincolnshire was married to George DAWSON in 1923 in Lincolnshire. They had 6 or 7 children together between 1923 and 1933.

Sometime between 1933 and 1935 Ethel Rose DAWSON (nee PEACOCK) eloped with Albert OWEN. They had four children together, all taking the name DAWSON although I have just discovered that their last child was registered as OWEN. The children are Roy DAWSON b 1935, Eileen Mary DAWSON b 1937, Reginald DAWSON b 1939 and Maureen Yvonne DAWSON (registered OWEN).

All I know apart from that is from Albert's death certificate, the 1939 register and my mother's birth certificate. Which is as follows:

Died in Moorland Avenue, Lincoln on 28th November 1944
Name: Albert OWEN
Age: 42 years
Address: 14 Moorland Crescent, Lincoln
Occupation: Railway Examiner
Cause of death: Myocardial failure, Angina pectorus, coronary thrombosis
Description and residence of informant: E. R. DAWSON, 14 Moorland Crescent, Lincoln

1939 register:
Address: 14 Moorland Crescent, Lincoln
OWEN Albert, male, married, dob March 30 1902, Railway C&W examiner
DAWSON Ethel Rose (changed later to ATKINSON 2nd husband m. 1948), female, married, dob March 10 1903, Domestic Unpaid
There are at least 6 closed records in the household which I believe to be their children and the children from Ethel's marriage to George DAWSON. It is interesting to note that Albert is also described as married. Perhaps I could find details of this marriage?

Although no father is named on my mother's birth certificate from 1937 the informant is A. OWEN described as the occupier of 363a High Street, Lincoln which on the same document is referred to as my mother's place of birth.

As Albert OWEN is a common name I am struggling to find out his place of birth and parents. I have tried browsing the railway employment records on Ancestry but to no avail. Does anyone have a copy of the British Railways pre grouping atlas so I can find out which companies operated in Lincoln?

Any help or ideas on a way forward would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Kate

Thanks Peter. So to get further I need to order these birth certificates? Perhaps one at a time to keep down costs? Or is there another way forward using this info?

Ok. Thanks for that! Cross posted! Is there any cross referencing I could do to be sure this is my grandfather?

Is there a newspaper announcement? 02 December 1944 - Lincolnshire Echo - Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England
Does that say anything useful?

They had four children together, all taking the name DAWSON although I have just discovered that their last child was registered as OWEN. The children are Roy DAWSON b 1935, Eileen Mary DAWSON b 1937, Reginald DAWSON b 1939 and Maureen Yvonne DAWSON (registered OWEN).

Three of the kids seem to have been registered as Owen

Births Mar 1936
OWEN Roy Peacock Lincoln 7a 684
Births Mar 1938
Dawson Eileen M Peacock Lincoln 7a 733
Births Sep 1939
Owen Reginald Peacock Lincoln 7a 895
Births Mar 1942
Owen Maureen Y Peacocks Lincoln 7a 1165

(not that it helps at all :-) )

Thanks Peter. It does look like a good match. I've found three generations thus far working on the railways. I think the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway records may provide some missing info on the move from Cheshire to Lincolnshire. I shall look into it further and this is a great starting point.

Thanks gardener. That's a good idea.

You finding the children registered as Owen is really odd because I have the same reference numbers but the register says Dawson. What's going on there then? Curios ear and curiouser.

Thanks all!

If on FreeBMD you search the registration details (date, Vol/Page, District) but omit the names it seems that only Eileen wasn't registered as both Dawson & Owen. It might be worth checking to see if adopted children had to be registered in both names.

It might depend on if the father was present or not for the registration. If only the mother registered the birth then the father's name could not be included as a surname for the child. Something like that.

But he did register Eileen's birth but he didn't reveal himself as the father. It's a surprise to me that his name is with the others. It's quite odd. I can't tell my mom that she's the only one who wasn't registered with his name, I don't think she'd like that!

No need to tell her. Perhaps it was just a different registrar?
